Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have finalized a landmark $240 million, four-year contract, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history, with an unprecedented $60 million per year.
Hours before the season opener, Prescott secured the deal, setting the stage for a strong Super Bowl push with the team he’s always dreamed of playing for.
“I wanted to be a Cowboy,” Prescott shared. “I wanted to stay a Cowboy and it got done.”
This new agreement, as revealed by a source familiar with the negotiations, includes $231 million in guaranteed money—$1 million more than Deshaun Watson’s previous record with the Browns. The source spoke anonymously since the deal hasn’t been officially announced.
Previously, Prescott had been in the final year of a $160 million contract, which was the Cowboys’ record. His new contract not only resets that bar but also strengthens his leadership role in the NFL’s quarterback market.
“I had an obligation to the league and to the other quarterbacks,” Prescott said. “It’s because I was up (due) and the next guy, I expect to beat me.”
The deal news broke just hours before Prescott led the Cowboys to a season-opening victory, throwing one touchdown in a dominant 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Despite weeks of uncertainty, the two sides reached a satisfying conclusion. Prescott, reflecting on the process, said, “In any negotiation, one side wants something and the other side wants something else. You’ve got to meet in the middle. I’m just glad it’s done and it works for everyone.”
Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones expressed his excitement, remarking, “I know that these numbers are beyond anything that I could have ever imagined.”
Prescott has guided Dallas to five playoff appearances in his eight years, but the team is still in pursuit of a deep postseason run. Now 31, Prescott is determined to break through the divisional round barrier that has stood since the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl victory in 1995.
“It’s about me holding up my end of the deal,” Prescott emphasized.
Jerry Jones, confident in the new agreement, added, “This was the thing to do for what we’re here for, and that is to win a championship.”
The Prescott deal follows Dallas’ recent investment in All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb, who signed a $136 million contract, further solidifying the team’s commitment to building a championship-caliber roster.
Prescott’s journey with the Cowboys began as a fourth-round draft pick in 2016. When then-starter Tony Romo was sidelined with an injury, Prescott stepped up, leading the team to a record-breaking 11-game win streak and earning the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honor.
Despite early playoff struggles, Prescott has shown resilience, with the Cowboys now consistently reaching the playoffs. Last season, hopes were high for a deep playoff run, but a shocking wild-card loss to the Packers derailed their progress. Prescott had a career-high 36 touchdown passes and 4,516 yards during the regular season, positioning him among the franchise’s top quarterbacks.
With this new contract, Prescott has the chance to surpass Dallas legends like Tony Romo, Troy Aikman, and Roger Staubach in career wins, touchdowns, and yards. Currently, Prescott holds the club’s record for completion percentage and continues to climb the ranks in passing yards and touchdowns.
The Cowboys are counting on Prescott to lead them back to championship glory, and with this historic deal in place, both sides are betting big on future success.
